My boyfriend of one year asked me to marry him and I said yes, but I’m really not sure. He’s obsessed with winning and always wants to be better than me or gets really nasty. I was promoted and now earn more than him and he made me feel bad for “showing him up.” But he should have been proud. Hailey, by email

Women tend to applaud men’s success, yet some men condemn a woman for theirs (a Best Actress winner is 63 per cent more likely to have her marriage end before a Best Actor’s will, for instance). The term “ball-breaker” says it all: you’re stealing what’s traditionally his. Studies show that couples who stay together celebrate each other’s successes, rather than compete. I feel this is a huge red flag. It’s time for a talk – and a rethink if you don’t get the answers you want.
