I found out from a friend that my husband of 15 years recently had a one-night stand. I’m very hurt but wonder if challenging him will make things worse? I don’t think he’s done this before and I think things like this happen in relationships.

Tracey says: You’re right that we all make mistakes.

Many one-night stands are more a drunken lapse of judgement than a sign a marriage is in trouble. But if you do confront your husband, say you heard a rumour, rather than present it as fact.

Also, realise that asking him for confirmation will change your marriage forever. Some people can cope with suspected infidelity, but can’t once it’s admitted.

Only you can make the decision whether to confront him – for support, visit www.relate.org.uk.
