From super spender to coupon queen: how Clair Spittle transformed her finances

A former shopping addict has told how she turned her life around, getting herself debt free and and becoming a 'coupon queen'.

Clair Spittle's problems with money first started when she went to university. she blew over a thousand pounds in just six months on going out and clothes.

As she started falling into bad money habits, her dad stepped in. This pushed Clair to start to manage her money and pay off her debts.

Now a mum to 12-week-old daughter Lola, Clair went from a super spender to a super coupon collector, saving herself hundreds of pounds.

She said: "Saving money and finding ways to cut cost, as with most mums, is really important to me. I want my money to stretch further so I can treat Lola and put money away for her when she's older."

Along with collecting coupons, Clair has held down two jobs and saved up enough so that she and partner Toby were able to put down a deposit on a house.

While they budget to make sure all of their outgoings are covered, Clair and Toby are still able to put money aside for Lola.

Now she's on maternity leave, Clair is using the coupon collecting to make their money stretch and to cut costs.

Instead of splurging now, Clair saves to buy the things she wants. She continued: "Whenever I want something, I work really hard to save the cash. At times that has meant holding down two jobs but you do what you have to do. It's certainly worth it in the end."

Clair admitted that seeing the money her friends saved from collecting coupons inspired her to join them.

Now she and Toby budget all of their money to make sure tey always have enough

"I have friends who've couponed for years and when I saw what they were able to get, decided I wanted some of that for myself.

"When I found out I was pregnant with Lola I began to make that a focus. I haven't paid full for any of the baby items we need and always shop around to find the best deals on essentials like nappies and wipes."

And Clair insists she's not embarrassed to pay in coupons, because she thinks of the extra cash she will have.

She added: "The first time I went to the checkout with my handful of coupons, I did feel a bit embarrassed but when I saw how much I saved, I was over the moon.

"Now, it doesn't bother me because I know how much extra cash I'll have in my purse at the end of the month."
