It turns out us Brits are pretty charitable folk according to this recent survey...

Over their lifetime, the average UK adult will give almost £30,000 to charity.

Typically Brits will contribute six per cent of their disposal income to good causes and about the same proportion of their free time by volunteering.

Charity shops also benefit with the average shopper spending £8,104 after browsing their rails, with three quarters visiting charity shops at least once a month – 1,700 times over the course of their adult lifetime.

The poll of 2,800 people, commissioned by Hyundai who have teamed up with Stand Up To Cancer to create a contactless charity donations car, found most of them would typically raise £1,263 for charity themselves by participating in activities such as fun runs or organising coffee mornings.

Almost two thirds of respondents typically select the gift aid option when donating to charity and over half have contributed to a website such as Just Giving.

One in ten said they would give more money to charity if they could do it using contactless payments.

A fifth of the population said they will keep giving after they die - by leaving money in their will to their chosen charity.

The research also looked at how charitable Britain's cities are - with Oxford coming out top.

Oxford is also right up there when it comes to leaving money behind to charity in wills, with only people from Brighton and Hove leaving more.

Meanwhile, Londoners are the most generous with the free time they volunteer to good causes, followed by Manchester.

When it comes to sponsorship, the top spot went to Cardiff, with the average adult from the Welsh capital typically raising £2,122 during their lifetime.
