By making some simple changes to your house, you could save hundreds of pounds over a year.

The first thing you should check is whether or not your loft is insulated. If it’s not then you should consider having it done, as this can reportedly save you £600 after five years!

It’s a simple procedure and on average costs around £300 which, when you consider the eventual savings, isn’t much.

After the roof comes the walls. When your house was built will depend on whether or not you need to fill the walls with insulation.

If you’re home is new, or was built after 1990s and has cavity walls then you don’t need to worry. But if it was built before that and you’re unsure then it’s best to get an installer to check them it out.

Filling cavity walls could save you a reported £140 a year, while having your house insulted from the inside might save you over £400 a year.

You should consider double glazing to keep heat in

Update your glazing to energy efficient windows. You will save money on energy bills as they will keep your house warm without using as much heating.

EnergySavingTrust.org.uk says that by updating your windows to those that are energy efficient you can save up to £175 a year.

A cheaper alternative to new windows is heavy curtains, a sealed blind or shutters on the outside.

Switch your light bulbs to energy efficient ones

Smaller things like turning off light switches when you leave a room will also save money.

According to ThisIsMoney.co.uk, you can save £55 a year just by switching your regular incandescent lights to Compact Florescent Lamps (CFLs).

If you turn your thermostat a couple of degrees lower, you won’t notice the difference but your purse will!

So, whether they’re big or small, making a few changes to your home can really save you money in the long run.
