Once the nation's most popular talent show, X Factor has hit its lowest viewing point since its launch in 2004.

Previously boasting an average audience of 14.13 million, the programme has been in decline since 2010 and pulled in just 5.6M on Saturday- a similar number to its first ever episode in 2004.

In contrast, the current season of Strictly Come Dancing has attracted an average of 9.4M viewers so far.

And to add insult to injury the Antiques Roadshow beat X Factor on Sunday, boasting 600,000 more viewers than the ITV show.

It seems even the addition of new judges Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw hasn't done anything to revive series 12.

The current season has seen audition room being taken away and the introduction of live judges' houses results, with Simon Cowell explaining:

"You can’t keep making the same show with the same format because if everybody knows what is going to happen every year, eventually people will get tired of it."

Hm, that seems to be happening sooner rather than later.
