Some great films are part of our must-watch line up this week, as well as continuing series to watch once the kids are in bed.
there’s also a brand new talent series starting now all the hype (and controversy) of Britain’s Got Talent is over, as well as annual charity football match, Soccer Aid.
Friday 3rd June
UK’s Best Part-Time Band - 9pm on BBC4 (New Series)
OK, so this doesn’t have the glam and fanfare of The X Factor but that’s kind of its charm. Friendly comic Rhod Gilbert ropes in A-listers of their day; Midge Ure from Ultravox, Peter Hook (New Order / Joy Division) and Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B to meet everyday people who play in bands, choosing their faves for a final battle it Manchester.
Fraud: How They Steal Your ID - 9pm on ITV
Cops are hunting Mr Posh – a master of disguise and accents who tricks tens of thousands of pounds of cash out of the banks every day. This alarming one-off is about how criminals are capable of fraud, and emptying our accounts – gulp!
Saturday 4th June
12 Years A Slave – 9pm on Channel 4
This is the film that was so great it ended up being nominated for nine gongs at the 2014 Oscars, and went on to win three (Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Lupita Nyong’o landed Best Supporting Actress). Here’s a chance to get stuck in again – and be reminded just why everyone went wild for it. Chiwetel Ejiofor is Solomon Northup, a free a black man from upstate New York, who in the years before the Civil War gets abducted and sold into slavery. As one critic said, it makes you feel you have “actually witnessed American slavery in all its appalling horror for the first time.”
You Saw Them Here First - 8pm on ITV
Paloma Faith with brown hair, a young Sheridan Smith on Blue Peter and a very serious Daniel Craig doing his National Youth Theatre thing. More brilliant, ‘OMG it’s them’ moments in this brill filler bringing us clips of what the stars did before they found fame. Sinitta’s on it too, acting!
Sunday 5th June
About Time - 9pm on Channel 4
This is one of those films you can’t believe you haven’t seen already (if indeed you haven’t). Tim is 21 when he discovers he can time travel, and uses this unusual gift to attempt to get a girlfriend. Of course, all sorts of hiccups occur – but this is tinged with sadness as Bill Nighy beautifully plays his dad harbouring a devastating secret. And Rachel McAdams is the one he finally settles down with. Look out for a disturbing scene involving his future child…
The Jungle Book - 5.05pm on Channel 4
One for the kids, this colourful animation will have you humming along to the catchy tunes that keep on coming. Bagheera the Panther and Baloo the Bear take Man Cub Mowgli under their wing, but have a difficult time trying to convince the boy to leave the jungle for human civilization. Being hounded by creepy Kaa the snake should help see him on his way…
Soccer Aid 2016 - 6pm on ITV
Yes, so this is football and therefore may as well come with a big “switch off” sign, but wait! It’s celebrity football – and decent A-listers at that, all wearing shorts (try 1D’s Louis, Mark Wright, Robbie Williams, Nicky from Westlife and footy royalty like Ronaldhino). It’s also for a fabulous cause; Unicef. The annual celeb match – live from Old Trafford - to date has raised more than £17m for the charity, wowzers! Dermot O’Leary and sporty type Kirsty Gallacher present.
Top Gear - 8pm on BBC2
Episode two has the likes the Sharleen Spiteri and Tinie Tempah testing out SUVs (that’s a four-wheel drive to me and you) in the wilds of South Africa (er, nice!). Damian Lewis is the Star In A Rallycross Car. Don’t miss Extra Gear at 10.05pm.
Love Island – 7pm and 9pm on ITV2
More from the sun-soaked Love Island set, where by now hopefully they’ll be some quality pairings – but please no cringe-worthy bedroom action yet!
