If you didn't think things could get more dramatic than Christmas day in Walford, then think again - because Mel Owen is about to return to the Square, and it's destined to cause trouble...

Actress Tamzin Outhwaite, who played the soap favourite for four years from 1998 to 2002, will be back on screens to reprise her role on EastEnders. It has been sixteen years since we last saw Mel, and now we're finally getting more information about what to expect from the former E20 business woman.

Tamzin told The Sun: "She's damaged, much more damaged and darker. You don't really know what's happened to her in the 16 years away.

"She's been through a whole other world which has messed her up as well, you see some of it, but not all of it."

When asked if the Mel we're about to see will be a Walford baddie, she said: "Well if you think about when she arrived with twists in her hair and a pink cardigan on, that's gone."

Gulp.

Mel also told Metro.co.uk: "Mel is still a really strong female character, but whereas before she was quite vulnerable, this time around - through the years and just getting older and wise she has become a bit more damaged. So what you see in Mel is something that's a bit more brittle.

"Her track of revenge is all under the guise of how charming and flirty she can be, but deep down she's a damaged girl."

Tamzin also said that her son would be making an appearance very soon after and to "watch this space."

We'll definitely be tuning in to see Mel return to her roots in January...
