There’s no point denying it - Spice World is, without a doubt, one of the greatest movies of all time ever.
Starring Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Menlanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell (all as themselves!), the movie follows the Spice Girls through a series of fictional events leading up to a major concert at London's Royal Albert Hall.
There’s dream sequences, alien invasions, murder mysteries, and plenty more besides - but one of our favourite things is the sheer number of celebrity cameos packed into the fun flick.
How many of these did you spot?
Best celebrity cameos in Spice World
Michael Barrymore - Mr Step
That’s right; Michael Barrymore played Mr Step, the army’s resident dance instructor - and he gave the girls a VERY strange interpretation of their hit tune, Mama.
Check it out:
Oh Mr Step, we love your moves, even if the Spice Girls don’t!
Jennifer Saunders - Fashionable Woman
It just wouldn’t be a British movie without a cameo from the delightful Jennifer Saunders now, would it?
And, yes, while she’s billed as ‘Fashionable Woman’, she may as well be down as Ab Fab’s Edina Monsoon - the whispered line of “I’m talking to a Spice Girl!” is just too perfect.
You can remind yourself of Jen’s big Spice World momenthere{
Jonathan Ross - Jonathan Ross
Jonathan Ross stars as himself in the Spice World movie, interviewing the bubbly and easily distracted pop stars about their music and life in the spotlight.
Viva forever, eh?
Bob Hoskins - Ginger Spice In Disguise
When Ginger Spice - of Spice Force Five - rushes into a telephone box to don a disguise, we never could’ve expected that Bob Hoskins would walk out.
Check it out:
We think this might be one of his finest movie moments, right up there amongst the likes of The Long Good Friday, Mona Lisa, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit!
Richard O’Brien - Damien
As in, yes, Richard O’Brien of Crystal Maze and Rocky Horror Show fame! He plays a dodgy photographer, sent to take incriminating pictures and recordings of the Spice Girls in a bid to ruin their reputation.
But, bless him, he does wind up seeing the error of his ways, and winds up using his powers for good not evil. All hail Damien!
Claire Rushbrook - Deborah
You may know Claire from Homefires, Ashes To Ashes, and Whitechapel, but she will always be Clifford’s beloved Deborah to us!
Elton John - Elton John
When you’re as famous as Elton, you only ever need to play yourself in movies.
Check it out:
He’s a total rocket man, isn’t he?
Stephen Fry - Judge
There’s a strange dream sequence in Spice World (okay, there’s a LOT of strange dream sequences in Spice World, but we’re focusing particularly on this one at the moment) which sees the girls on trial. The judge presiding over their case? STEPHEN FRY!!!
He definitely suits the wig, doesn’t he?
Alan Cumming - Piers
You might not expect to find an award-winning actor in Spice World, but that’s exactly what we have with Alan Cumming. As in, THE Alan Cumming, of X-Men, Eyes Wide Shut and Spy Kids fame.
He plays Piers Cuthbertson-Smyth, an avid documentary-maker who stalks the girls in a desperate bid to use them as subjects for his next project.
Yes, he’s the one who gets disappointed when Clifford fails to hang himself live on stage at the Royal Albert Hall.
Richard E. Grant - Clifford
Withnail & I, Dracula, The Age Of Innocence, Game Of Thrones, Doctor Who… and Spice World?
OH YES!
Richard E. Grant famously played Clifford, the Spice Girls’s stressed-out manager - who threatens to commit suicide when Posh, Baby, Ginger, Sporty and Scary all disappear before a big performance at the Royal Albert Hall.
It might just be his best ever performance to date.
We mean it. His best performance to date.
Bob Geldof - Bob Geldof
Bet you didn’t recognise Bob with his Scary hairstyle, did you?
Hugh Laurie - Poirot
Another scene, another strange dream sequence.
Check it out:
Hugh Laurie is one of those quintessentially British actors that needs to have a cameo in ANYTHING based in London.
Need more proof? The House star also took on a starring role in the London episode of Friends:
Everything we do, we do it for Hugh.
Meat Loaf - Dennis
He’d do anything for those girls, but he won’t do that.
Meat Loaf played the bus driver in Spice World - before Victoria Beckham took over the wheel, that is.
The role also saw him reunited with his Rocky Horror Show co-star, Richard O’Brien - which definitely lifted our hearts in a very big way.
All hail Meat Loaf!
Sir Roger Moore - Chief
Sir Roger Moore might be famed for playing James Bond, but he took on the role similar to that of 007’s arch-nemesis, Blofeld, in the Spice World movie.
Check it out:
He’s shaken - but he’s not stirred.
Ahem.
Anyway, in a later scene, Sir Roger can be seen dressed in an immaculate white suit and bottle-feeding a piglet. So that’s that, really.
Kevin McNally - Policeman
Remember that London policeman, who charged the girls with: "dangerous driving, criminal damage, flying a bus without a license, and frightening the pigeons”?
Well, he was only played by Kevin McNally - you know, from Pirates of the Caribbean?
We love how he’s so easily manipulated by a devious Emma Bunton in his big Spice World scene. It just goes to show that nobody’s perfect, eh?
Jools Holland - Musical Director
Blink and you’ll miss him.
Seriously!
Dominic West - Photographer
As in, yes, Detective Jimmy McNulty from The Wire!
Check out the award-winning Dominc West in action:
We love that this mammoth star is simply credited as ‘Photographer’. It just goes to show that anyone can be anything, so long as they put in the hard work!
Mark McKinney and George Wendt - Martin Barnfield and Graydon
These two are comedy icons in Hollywood but, in the alternate reality of Spice World, they’re over-eager movie writers and obsessive fans of the Spice Girls. Desperate to convince Clifford to let them write a movie for the girls, they wind up practically stalking him across the UK - and eventually convince him to sign up for…
Yup, you guessed it; the plot of Spice World itself, complete with bus chases, bombs and more.
It’s just too meta for us to handle, really.
Phew!
And you know what? That's not even all the obscure cameos packed inside this gem of a movie; even The Dream Boys wind up making an appearance at some point!
