EastEnders cast members Samantha Womack, Rita Simons and Scott Maslen have spoken out after the death of Samantha and Rita’s characters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell.
The sisters were seen preparing for Ronnie’s wedding to Jack during the New Year’s Day episode.
The concluding scenes saw Roxy jump into a swimming pool with Ronnie following close behind her.
Unfortunately neither of the sisters made it out alive after drowning.
After the episode aired, Samantha took to Twitter to express her sadness at no longer being part of the BBC soap anymore.
She wrote: “I’m sorry I can’t respond to any comments.. I’m honestly broken. An appropriate end to the darkest year ever @OfficialRita @RealScottMaslen.”
Rita added: “Thank you all for your lovely tweets. I don’t really have words right now. But words will come… in good time #R&R.”
Scott, who plays Jack, later posted to say how much he had enjoyed working with his co-stars.
He wrote: “End of an era! #ronnieandroxy loved working with @sam_womack and @OfficialRita #eastenders #sadtimes thanks for all the tweets!”
Many fans praised show bosses for the dramatic and emotional scenes.
One person tweeted: “Well that was amazing, felt like I was watching a movie I was glued to the telly.”
Another posted: “Woah EastEnders, that was epic! Love the Mitchell sisters.”
And another wrote: “Don’t normally watch soaps, but tonight’s #EastEnders was amazing.. It pulled at every heart string, not to mention the epic camera work.”
