READ: This alternative ending for Friends is seriously dark

When Friends ended, although devastated, we were satisfied with how the characters’ stories tied up for the most part

Forgetting of course the spin-off Joey, which almost ruined our memories of the loveable Italian ladies’ man forever.

But with Monica, Chandler and their twins Jack and Erica moving away to live life in the suburbs, Phoebe having her happily ever after with husband Mike and Rachel getting off the plane for Ross – we were content.

Despite this, one fan has come up with an alternative ending to the popular US sitcom: and it’s dark.

What the Twitter user suggests is, instead of the show focusing on six people living, loving and learning in New York City, Friends was actually about a Crystal Meth-addicted, homeless Phoebe who imagined her five best pals.

In the almost chilling post, @strnks wrote: “All 10 seasons were merely [Phoebe’s] fevered imagination, projecting herself into the lives of the others. All she ever wanted was… Friends.

“The final scene would be Phoebe walking away from Central Perk, with the Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler and Monica characters making reference to ‘the crazy lady who always stares at us’. They all have different names and personalities.”

In reference to Phoebe’s twin sister Ursula, who she had a difficult relationship with throughout the series, @strnks added: “Phoebe walks past a furniture store and catches her reflection in mirror.

“The name of the store? ‘Ursula’.”

And perhaps the most upsetting part at all is based around the opening credits of the show, which saw the Friends splashing about in a fountain before falling onto their squashy orange sofa.

“Finally Phoebe returns to the park where she sleeps in front of the fountain,” @strnks wrote. “A broken lamp stands next to her bench. It starts to rain. From behind, we see her put up six dirty, but brightly coloured umbrellas.”
