Vivean, best known for playing Ramsay Street villain Mrs Nell Mangel in Neighbours has died aged 92.

Her cause of death has not been released.

She became a firm fan favourite on the soap and spent two years terrorising everyone who lived on Ramsay Street.

Jean Vivra Gray was born in Cleethorpes in 1924 and moved to Austraila in 1952 to pursue an acting career.

Gray had landed many roles in Australian series including Prisoner: Cell Block H, Anzacs, Matlock Police and The Sullivans. However, she was best known for playing Mrs Nell Mangel in Neighbours from 1986 to 1988, so much so that she used to be on the recieving end of verbal attacks as many could not distinguish her from her on-screen character.

In 1989 she was quoted as saying: "I could barely set foot outside my own door without someone screaming abuse at horrid old Mrs Mangel.

"People didn't seem to appreciate it was acting. So I decided to take a break."

Mark Little, who played her on-screen son Joe, paid tribute on Twitter.

Rick Maier issued a statement on behalf of Australia's Network Ten, which broadcasts the soap:

"Vivean's contribution to Australian drama will never be forgotten. It is a very sad day for the Neighbours family."

Our thoughts are with Jean's friends and family at this extremely sad time.
