According to reports in the Daily Star, the 68-year-old, despite striking up an unlikely friendship with rapper Tinchy Stryder, 'deeply regrets' joining the show, after realising he doesn't fit in with his fellow contestants.

A source said: "Just as things were settling down, now Michael wants to go.

"Frantic efforts are being made to persuade him to stay."

They added: "He adds a certain gravitas to the camp atmosphere. He would be a huge loss."

Michael Buerk, whose love of cashews and dry sense of humour have made him popular with viewers, would be the third unexpected exit if these rumours prove to be true.
