In last night's Coronation Street episode Michelle Connor, played by Kym Marsh, suffered from a heartbreaking miscarriage and the soap stars' daughter has praised her mum's bravery on social media.
In scenes aired yesterday Corrie viewers watched the emotional scene unfold as Michelle Connor and Steve McDonald discovered she was in labour at 23 weeks. After giving birth to her son – who they named Ruairi – the doctors told the pair that he was not breathing and therefore they couldn't try to save him. In the devastating scenes that followed viewers watch Michelle and Steve say an emotional goodbye to their baby.
Both Kym Marsh and Simon Gregson (who plays Steve) have been praised for their powerful performances in the storyline that are personal to both actors. In 2009 Kym Marsh lost her son Archie who was born prematurely at 21 weeks and five days and Simon and his wife have suffered 11 miscarriages.
Kym's daughter Emilie Cunliffe praised her mum for doing her late brother Archie well after the scenes aired.
And plenty of Coronation Street fans flooded Twitter with support to the actors:
Even though the storyline is very close to home, Kym confessed that the main reason she wanted to do it was to raise awareness about something that affects thousands of women. The 40-year-old actress also admitted that she had to go to "dark places" when filming those emotional scenes: "It was quite tricky and I did find it a challenge, it was quite tough but I was absolutely looked after from day one.
"I had a wonderful psychotherapist that looked after me. On hand 24/7. I found that immensely helpful," she told OK! Online.
Kym also revealed that from this storyline she wants the subject that is seen as taboo to be spoken about more: "When you lose a baby it's something that never ever leaves you, it's something that you have to deal with and something that you learn to accept and learning to accept what's happened to you is something that comes from talking."
We found both Kym and Simon's portrayal incredible and love that Coronation Street has covered an important topic.
