Hollyoaks fans were left gobsmacked when Patrick Blake (played by the divine Jeremy Sheffield) was murdered earlier this week.

Originally he had asked his wife Maxine (Nikki Sanderson) to help him to commit suicide, as he was terminally ill with motor neurone disease (MND).

And, sneakily, he had left plenty of evidence to then frame her for his murder, in a bid to frame her for his murder after believing she was going to run away with former flame Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson).

But, when Patrick learned that Maxine really did love him, he changed his mind, choosing instead to spend as much time with her and their baby daughter as possible.

So who bumped him off?

Well, it was none other than soapland’s youngest serial killer, Nico Blake.

"But I've already picked out what I was going to wear [to your funeral],” she told him creepily, as he lay helpless in his bed.

So what was Nico’s motive?

The fact that Patrick had tried to expose her killer secret to policeman Ben Bradley, of course.

However, despite it seemingly being very clear that Nico had bumped off her granddad, there was a lot of confusion from viewers.

Mainly because, as the episode aired at a 6:30pm slot on Channel 4, viewers didn't actually witness her killing him.

One fan tweeted: “How did Nico kill Patrick, because the suicide drink is spilt on the floor so he didn't drink that?”

Taking to Twitter, Jeremy Sheffield responded: “Did you not notice the cushions on the bed?”

And he didn’t stop there when it came to answering fan questions, either. One fan asked him directly: “Did Nico suffocate you? I am a little confused.”

Jeremy replied enthusiastically: “She soooo did!”, along with a little screaming emoticon.

He was also quick to respond when fans asked him whether or not the murder weapon (aka that deadly pillow) would be covered in Nico’s DNA.

“She lives in the house,” he explained. “Her DNA would be inconclusive.”

Eep.

Luckily for Nico, Maxine - believing Patrick had gone through with his plan to frame her for his murder - decided to act quickly upon finding his body.

Begging Darren Osbourne for help, the pair hid Patrick’s body in a damaged wall (which was later filled in with bricks), and left his wheelchair at a cliffside.

There doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings between Jeremy and Nikki, mind you.

While police currently believe that Patrick took his own life, it’s only a matter of time before his body is discovered.

But will the truth about his death come out? Or will Maxine go to prison for Nico’s crimes?
