Hollyoaks viewers have been praising the show for their "powerful" storyline that has shed the light on unconscious bias.

Martine Deveraux has been going through a lot recently – she's involved in a love triangle with Felix Westwood, she found a lump on her breast and she's going for Businesswoman of the Year.

However during a recent episode, viewers witnessed the difference between Martine's day compared to Grace Black's.

It all began when the delivery driver mistook Grace as the owner of Martine's company.

Then while Grace was offered a coffee and given extra time for her interview, Martine was criticised for running late with the interviewer advising her to "stand out" from "diverse candidates".

And by the end of the day, Peri Lomax offered Grace the last appointment over Martine. When Grace broke down in tears, Peri told Martine to "have a bit of sympathy" before telling her she was being "aggressive".

Then at home while answering questions for the Businesswoman of the Year, Martine opened up about 'a day in her life' and the micro-aggressions she constantly faces.

"The most tiring things about these micro-aggressions is that they are so subtle, so covert, it's hard to prove," she explained.

"When it comes to the impact unconscious bias is having on Black lives — Black women's lives — the facts speak for themselves.

"Being a Black woman means no matter how early you get up in the morning, you never really get a head start because the game is already rigged and it's not in your favour… That place where racism and sexism meet in the middle, that's where Black women live our lives."

And it appears that it's not just viewers that the storyline has impacted as Richard Blackwood - aka Felix - has admitted that he too has learnt from it.

"It's really weird because of all of those micros that were shown, I've been through, but in the previous ten years, it wasn't micro, it was just in your face. So it's nice that [writer] Karla [Marie Sweet] could teach me the new way that people are showing their racism.

"One of the things that did stand out to me was [that] I'm guilty of calling Black women 'strong Black queens' and I always use it as a term of endearment – because a strong part of me knows that struggles of a Black woman... vicariously, through my mum and sister and family," he admitted on Hollyoaks' Don't Filter Feelings podcast.

The actor went on to say, "But when Kéllé's character [Martine] says 'Why do I always have to be that character?'… when I watched it back, it made me go 'wow'. I've never stopped to think what that pressure might feel like.

"Because what I am essentially saying is that you are not allowed to show vulnerability. You are not allowed to say a situation has hurt or troubled you because it doesn't adhere to being a strong Black woman.

"I never thought that, as a Black man, I was already contributing to the pressures that a Black woman, or woman of colour was having to face."
