During the phone in segment on the show the mum on the phone - named Angela - explained that during the last two years of his life her son was in "terrible pain" so her family decided to set up a 'Do Not Resuscitate'.
Things took an awful turn during the last few days of her son's life after he contracted septicaemia. Angela explained: "He was moved off the children's ward to an adult intensive care unit because he was too sick to be transferred to the children's intensive care unit.
"And basically, everything we'd set up over the 16 years that we had him was thrown away and they decided when he had a cardiac arrest – rather than honour our DNR – they would intubate him, even though he was actually brain dead, we found out later."

She then went on to reveal the heart-breaking moment she saw her son who looked unrecognisable: "We were taken to him and he didn't look like our son at all by that point.
"It was horrendous. I can't explain to anybody. I would not want anybody to ever see that."
The grieving mum later went on to reveal that doctors admitted they had made a mistake but the worse part was being separated from her son for two and a half hours.
Mum-of-three Holly began to break down after Angela revealed her son passed away and she didn't get the chance to wash her son after he died. In tears, Holly said: "I'm so sorry..."
Angela emotionally opened up and said: "He was dead with a tube in his face and I was supposed to say goodbye to him.
"Our little boy died the most horrendous, undignified death that I have ever seen in my life and I have to live with that every day now."
After both Holly and Phillip Schofield asked Deidre how people are supposed to get through something so tragic, she too was choked up before recommending The Passionate Friend organisation.
She added: "You can tell we’re all so moved by your story. It’s tragic."
The phone-in topic came after Holly and Phil discussed Charlie Gard's parents who do not want to turn off the life support machine for the 10-month-old son.
This isn't the first time Holly has broken down in tears on This Morning, earlier this year she was reduced to tears after a mum appeared on the show to raise awareness to Sepsis after he son died from the disease.
