The country wept last night as Bake Off’s Nadiya Hussain was crowned champion of the BBC One baking show.

In an emotional finale, Nadiya blew the judges away with her wedding cake finale, incorporating her Bangladeshi roots with her British patriotism.

After dedicating her life to being a housewife, Nadiya revealed after her victory that she would ‘never put boundaries on herself again’ after succeeding in the hit show.

Inspirational Nadiya reduced even Mary Berry to tears when she said: “I’m never going to put boundaries on myself ever again. I'm never going to say I can't do it.”

Nadiya, 30, chose to bake a wedding cake as her finale as she and husband Abdal, 34, never had on on their big day as it is not part of a traditional Bangladeshi wedding ceremony.

She explained: “The Showstopper was a celebration cake, and as I never had my own wedding cake I wanted a proper iced wedding cake. I bought a sari that was red, white and blue, in the colours of the union jack and I decorated my stand with that.

Judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry were delighted to crown Nadiya as the winner

“At the very end of the filming I took the cake out to my family's table and we all had a slice. So my husband and I did get our wedding cake after all.”

Nadiya became popular with fans when viewers began to notice her hysterical facial expressions.

She said: “I really hope that I have not become known more for my facial expressions or my eyebrows than my baking.

“I had no idea that this would become a talking point on social media.

“It's all a bit of fun and not to be taken seriously, and I think it reflected what was going on in the tent.”

Losing out on the big prize, but by no means disappointed, were trainee doctor Tamal Ray, 29, and photographer Ian Cumming, 41.

Tamal may not have won the Bake Off, but he certainly won the viewers hearts after becoming something of a sex symbol throughout the series.
