Coronation Street star axed over storyline controversy

Former Corrie star Georgia May Foote was reportedly axed from the soap after a storyline controversy back in 2015.

Georgia May Foote joined Corronation Street as Katy Armstrong in 2010, but after bagging a £100,000 contract in 2014 quit the show just a year later.

Now, it has been reported that Georgia was axed after refusing to take a storyline which would see her character convert to Islam.

Speaking about Georgia's departure from the cobbles, her former co-star Marc Anwar - who played Sharif Nazir from 2013 until 2016 - has stated the actress turned down a plot line where Katy would fall in love with Sharif's grandson Zeedan.

“The storyline was that he would then ask her to become a Muslim," Marc told The Sun on Sunday.

“But when that was put to her she declined. I don’t know what her reasons were.

“But she was adamant she didn’t want to do that storyline. And so the response was, ‘OK, see you later."

The Corrie actor also revealed that show bosses weren't able to axe Georgia straight away as a result of her lucrative contract, and so Georgia's scenes slowly dwindled.

Last year, Georgia's character was killed off in a fatal car accident off-screen, ruling out a return to the soap.

At the time, a source told The Sun: "As Katy, Georgia was really popular with Corrie fans and had some big storylines. But bosses have clearly decided that she has no future in the soap, and have ruled out a return by killing her off.

"You might have thought they would show such a well-known character being written out on screen but that wasn't to be."

Instead, a picture of Katy was posted on the Coronation Street Instagram account, along with the caption: "R.I.P Katy Armstrong."

This sparked mass confusion amongst fans of the soap, who were unsure whether the post was referring to Georgia or her on-screen character.

One commented:“The actor of the character?”, while others asked: "Has she died in real life?”.
