If you’re anything like us, you watched every single episode of Friends when it originally aired back in the day.
And, like, every single episode a hundred times more when they re-aired them on telly… and again when they came out on DVD.
So we kind of assumed that we knew e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g there was to know about the show.
As it turns out, however, we were wrong; dead wrong.
Speaking recently to People, Matt Le Blanc revealed that there may have been a lot more to Joey Tribbiani’s relationship with Phoebe Buffay.
In fact, him and Lisa Kudrow thought the duo were made for each other - and the TRUE lobsters of the series.
He explained: “Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time.
“We'd go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognises, there's Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together.”
As Janice would say…
It certainly makes sense to their friendship, doesn’t it?
After all, Joey was the one who gave Phoebe the best kiss of her life (his own words!)
He also gave up meat for her, to help her alleviate her guilt over her pregnancy cravings.
And let’s not forget all those other cute little moments the duo shared…
However, as we all know from WATCHING the show, anything romantic between the pair remained unconfirmed by the end of the series.
In fact, Phoebe wound up marrying Mike (Paul Rudd) - the very guy that Joey had accidentally set her up on a blind date with.
So what’s the deal?
Well, as Matt puts it simply: “They [the producers] were like, ‘Nah.’”
We guess Phoebe and Joey’s relationship was meant to be a reminder that men and women CAN just be friends - despite what When Harry Met Sally taught us.
And, despite the fact that their romance never really took off, there’s no denying that the pair were very important to each other.
After all, who did Phoebe originally ask to walk her down the aisle?
Yup, that’s right; Joey. And he played the overprotective father a little too well, giving Mike HELL before he took his surrogate daughter down the aisle.
Bless them; long live Phoebe and Joey!
