Friends creator reveals Monica and Chandler nearly didn’t happen!

Can you imagine a world where Monica and Chandler DIDN’T get married – It would’ve been like Rachel getting together with Gunther, right?

Marta Kauffman, the creator of Friends, has revealed that Monica and Chandler’s fling in London was initially meant to be just that. According to Marta, the original idea was for them to go on as if nothing happened when they returned to New York.

Thankfully Marta changed her mind at the last minute, after their one night stand at Ross and Emily’s wedding was so well received by fans.

But it gets worse: not only were Chandler and Monica never going to get married, their fumble in our capital city almost didn’t air, as the writers were worried about fan backlash.

Marta explained: “Suddenly the audience told us they had been waiting [for them to get together] and we had to rethink how we were going to keep going and change the relationship.”

It just goes to show that sometimes you have to take risks, and sometimes those risks pay off.

Because us loyal fans wouldn’t have only missed out on seeing Chandler and Monica’s adorable relationship blossom, we’d have lost some of our favourite moments from the series.

You know, Phoebe and Rachel and the whole ‘they don’t know we know they know we know’. Phew. Let’s not forget about Ross’ reaction to seeing his sister and best friend getting it on through the apartment window.

And so, so many more. It’s just not worth thinking about it, really.
