It's pretty safe to say that Emmerdale is on fire at the moment – although not literally - they're probably saving that for later on in the year.
Part of the reason the Dales is doing so brilliantly right now has to be down to Ashley Thomas' heart-breaking early onset dementia storyline, which has won actor John Middleton a whole heap of praise (and probably had something to do with the National Television Award they took back to Yorkshire last week.)
Next week sees an even more heart-breaking twist in the tale as former-vicar Ashley leaves the village to start life in a permanent care home. Seriously, stock up on some tissues for this one.
Poor Laurel finally faces up to the truth that her husband needs more care than she can give him. Prepare yourself for some really hard to watch scenes as a confused Ashley initially thinks he's being thrown out of his home – and lashes out during a family dinner on the eve of his admission.
The next day Laurel, Gabby and Sandy take him to his new residential home, but there's more heartache as Ashley forgets where they are.
Luckily, it's not long before he settles into his new home, but this makes things tougher for Laurel who is now facing life without her other half. Will she be able to cope or will we see her reaching for the bottle again?
In some happier news for the family, Dales boss Iain McLeod has teased another special episode for Ashley's storyline and even some 'joyful' times coming up this year.
We think we'll be needing them.
