It’s the day that Emmerdale fans have been waiting for - but will Laurel and Ashley’s wedding prove to be the happy-ever-after we were all hoping for?
Probably not.
Well, this IS a soap wedding, after all, so it makes sense that there will be plenty of tears, drama, and traumatising twists.
As viewers will already be aware, Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) and Ashley (John Middleton) are preparing to tie the knot for the second time.
However Laurel is set to have a huge falling out with her dad, Doug (Duncan Preston), when she discovers that he doesn’t want the marriage to go ahead due to Ashley’s dementia.
There’s also the fact that Harriet (Katherine Dow Blyton) is still fighting with her own feelings for Ashley, which may prove to be even more troubling when it falls upon her to perform the ceremony for her ex-lover and Laurel.
Despite all of this, the couple are positively glowing as they repeat their vows to one another.
But can they ever truly have a happy wedding day?
Speaking to What’s On TV, Charlotte explained: “It’s the most perfect, beautiful and wonderful wedding, but there’s a traumatic twist.
We’re going to really show how living with dementia can be shocking, disruptive, frightening and disorientating.
“It’s the simple things you don’t even think about if you’re living with somebody with the condition.”
And it’s a firm reminder that, despite the air of celebration everyone feels at the wedding, this is a love story which is tinged with sadness.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Charlotte added: “This is ultimately a tragic love story.
"Laurel has made the decision to live life to the full with Ashley. She's not thinking about the problems ahead.
“But we are going to really show how living with someone who has dementia can be frightening, shocking and disconcerting. Especially when there's a young family involved."
Watch the events leading up to Ashley and Laurel's big day in Emmerdale from Monday 14 March on ITV.
