Emmerdale has been named best soap AGAIN – and it’s thanks to Chas Dingle and Aaron Livesy.
Just a week after they pipped Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks to the post and won the Best Serial Drama at the National Television Awards, Emmerdale scooped the Best Soap gong at the prestigious Broadcast Awards, proving that they are well and truly the soap of the moment.
And the second win of the year for the Leeds-based show is largely down to Lucy Pargeter and Danny Miller (Chas Dingle and Aaron Livesy) for their performances over Aaron’s abuse storyline.
The judgey-folk particularly admired Aaron telling his mum that he’d been sexually abused as a child, praising the actors, the location and the direction which, apparently, gave it a “Scandi drama” vibe.
Aaron opening up to Robert Sugden and then Chas about the abuse he suffered at the hand of his dad, Gordon, was one of the most talked about storylines in recent years.
Viewers and critics alike have heaped praise on Danny since the storyline aired a year ago.
The judges said the episode where Aaron bravely revealed the truth to Chas was “emotionally satisfying”.
They added that it was “the most consistent of all continuing dramas in terms of both storytelling and acting.”
Danny recently appeared on Lorraine to talk about the storyline, which earned him an NTA nomination for Best Serial Drama Performance.
He told her: "When this storyline was first set about, it never occurred to us how popular it was going to be - in the right way.
"It's such a negative thing that we're trying to create some sort of positivity out of it and say it is ok to speak out. It's ok to let those demons go from all those years and that was what we aimed to do, and I think we've achieved it."
