The storyline had not been publicised by EastEnders, so the viewers had no idea about the devastating scenes beforehand, making everything all that more real.

Shocked EastEnders fans took to social media to praise both Shona and Danny-Boy Hatchard (Lee Carter) for their portrayal of such an important suject.

After the episode aired, Danny-Boy tweeted his thanks, urging those affected by miscarriage to seek help and advice:

Show bosses are keeping extremly tight-lipped about the events that will happen as a result of Whitney and Lee's heartbreak - will they ever be the same again? Both couples have had traumatic storylines on the square and the future definitely isn't looking bright.

EastEnders fans already know that Lee Carter will be leaving the soap in coming months - will more tragedy tear the Carter's apart?

Addressing his departure, EastEnders bosses said: “This was a tough decision but sometimes to create big storylines characters need to come and go.

“Danny-Boy is a dedicated actor and a popular cast member, and as part of the Carter family, no one should rule out a return.”

A spokesman added: “Danny-Boy has been a great addition to the cast and we wish him all the best for the future.”
