BBC One’s EastEnders was praised for Shabnam’s emotional stillbirth storyline, with many commenting on how sensitively and accurately the trauma of giving birth to a ‘sleeping angel’ was portrayed.
And the storyline is set to continue, as the soap explores how grief has affected Shabnam Masood (Rakhee Thakrar).
In next week’s episodes, soap fans will watch as Shabnam attempts to make contact with her daughter Jade.
Increasingly concerned about the little girl going to live with Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and rapist Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo), the grieving mother decides to take matters into her own hands - and bring her daughter home.
Rakhee Thakrar told the Radio Times: "She's almost drawn there by the force of her maternal instinct.
"Many bereaved parents will tell you that when their baby dies they are left with 'empty arms', all these maternal feelings and sometimes there's nowhere for those feelings to go.
"I think in that moment those feelings overpower Shabnam and take her to see her daughter and make sure she's OK."
But this isn’t about replacing her baby son Zaair; it’s about Shabnam embracing her maternal instincts, and doing what she thinks is best for her daughter.
She added firmly: "This isn't about a replacement for Shabnam. She's very aware of what can go wrong in the world now and at this moment, that 'wrong' for her is Jade going into the hands of the Carters."
Are you surprised that Shabnam wants to keep Jade away from Dean and Shirley?
