The Mitchell family has been shocked with the recent news of Peggy’s cancer being terminal.
And in emotional scenes to air Friday 13 May, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) plans to take a trip with his mum, but Peggy (Barbara Windsor) has other plans.
Trying to convince his mum to have life-prolonging treatment, and to continue fighting the disease, former Queen Vic landlady – in her character’s typical fashion - has other ideas.
Deciding to take Phil on a trip down memory lane, Peggy starts their bonding time with a boat trip on the Thames, which Executive Producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins reveals was Steve McFadden’s idea.
Dominic explained to the Radio Times: "Steve loves the water and because Peggy very much represents London, he thought that we needed to have her out on the Thames.
"His idea was to improvise some of it because he and Barbara know their characters so well. So we put these two brilliant actors in a boat on the Thames and let them see what they came up with. And it really works - I did cry, I have to say."
Peggy and Phil have had their share of arguments over the years, but now they are putting it all behind them as Barbara makes her final exit from the BBC One soap.
Prepare the tissues for this episode!
Fans of the show have been eagerly awaiting the return of famous Walford matriarch Peggy, but unfortunately her appearance will be a short one.
However, Dominic reassured fans that her final time on EastEnders will be memorable, saying: "I love and respect Barbara and I want to give Peggy Mitchell the exit she deserves. Because she's one of the best TV matriarchs of all time."
We can’t wait to see the rest of Barbara’s scenes in EastEnders, especially as her on-screen children Grant (Ross Kemp) and Sam (Danniella Westbrook) are returning to say their farewells too.
This episode o EastEnders airs tonight, Friday 13th May, at 8pm on BBC One.
