It seems as if EastEnders fans will DEFINITELY need a stash of tissues for Peggy Mitchell’s final episode, which will air at 7.25pm on BBC One this Tuesday (17th May).
We know that the matriarch has returned to Walford for one last time, as she battles terminal cancer.
However it seems as if, despite being surrounded by her family and friends, Peggy will tragically die alone.
It has now been reported that Peggy, in a bid to take back control over her illness, will take a cocktail of pills to end the constant pain caused by her illness.
The scenes are said to be “incredibly emotional” - and for good reason.
A source told The Sun: “She's Peggy Mitchell, she'd never just sit and wait to die.
“It feels right she should wrestle back control and die on her own terms.”
They added that her final scenes will be incredibly emotional, as the pills cause her to hallucinate.
Speaking about Barbara Windsor’s final scenes, they said: “At the end, the drugs make her hallucinate.
“Her final scene is incredibly emotional.”
This ties in with previous reports that Pam St Clement - who played Pat Butcher in the BBC One soap - will feature in Peggy’s final moments as a hallucination.
An insider said at the time: “Viewers can expect lots of surprises for Peggy's final episodes.
“They are not to be missed and will go down in EastEnders history.”
EastEnders bosses will be pulling out all the stops with a few special treats for viewers.
Just before Peggy’s last ever episode airs, The One Show are to broadcast a special edition live from Albert Square. With an extensive interview with Dame Barbara Windsor, viewers will have the opportunity to hear how Barbara felt on joining the show, her memories of past iconic moments and how much EastEnders has meant to her.
In the One Show first viewers are urged to stay tuned to the end of the show to see Dame Barbara Windsor introduce her final ever episode.
Alex Jones said: “It was wonderful to meet my all-time favourite EastEnders character. She was very welcoming and we had a fascinating chat about her long and fabulous career, on and off the square. Dame Barbara and Peggy certainly share the same warmth and infectious laugh!
“She is a living showbiz legend and although it will be sad to say goodbye to Peggy, Matt and I hope that we will continue to see Dame Barbara on our screens for a long time yet.”
As soon as Peggy’s last ever episode ends fans can tune into BBC iPlayer to see a special featurette - “Peggy Mitchell: Last Orders”.
The featurette will go behind the scenes of filming and includes interviews with existing and previous cast members to celebrate all things Peggy Mitchell.
It will include interviews with Dame Barbara Windsor and Ross Kemp (who has reprised his role as Grant Mitchell), as well as an exclusive interview with Phil Mitchell star Steve McFadden, who talks about working alongside Dame Barbara Windsor and how Peggy’s demise is the “end of a chapter”.
With other guests from both in front and behind the camera talking about how Dame Barbara created a soap icon, this featurette will have some special surprises that mark the end of an era for Peggy Mitchell and EastEnders fan.
It doesn’t make up for the fact that we’re going to have to say goodbye to Peggy once and for all though, does it?
