As every long-term EastEnders fan will know, there was always something electric about the Mitchell brothers.

Phil (Steve McFadden) and Grant (Ross Kemp) were always obsessed with protecting their dear old ma, the Vic, and their family.

But they were also at each others throats a LOT of the time - usually because they were busy fighting over Sharon (Letitia Dean).

Ever since Ross Kemp quit the show to embark on his own Tv career, we’ve all been missing that dynamic duo.

But now it seems as if producers have been busy working on a brand-new ‘Mitchell brothers’ to sate our appetites… and they’ve been right under our noses for years.

Yup, it’s only Ben and Jay!

Jamie Borthwick, who plays Jay, explained: “They have the legacy of the Mitchell brothers. What I like is that it’s not an exact replica of Phil and Grant, because Jay is not actually in the family - he’s been brought in.

“I think it’s perfect because it’s not perfect. It’s not a case of Phil’s boy and Grant’s boy together - it’s different and that’s why it works.”

The talented young actor continued: “Ben’s got the edge, but, don’t get me wrong, Jay’s got that little tick to him. We haven’t seen it for a while.

“It takes something meaningful to bring it out.”

Speaking to the Daily Star, Harry Reid, who plays Ben, added: “We can’t wait to see the transition from when they stop listening to Phil and step out on their own.

“At the moment they are still young and listening to him - he’s still the big man.

“But there’s going to come a point when Phil is older and can’t do everything anymore and wants them to take over.”

He added: “What’s interesting about them is that what messed up Phil and Grant was Sharon.

“There is no woman who can come between Ben and Jay because Ben is gay.”

We’ve already seen our fair share of meaty stories from Ben and Jay; after all, they did push poor old Heather down the stairs - and they were firmly in the frame for Lucy Beale’s murder for a while.

Roll on the day they start terrorising Albert Square on their own terms, eh?

Do you think Ben and Jay have what it takes to be the new 'Mitchell Brothers'?
