Dot Branning (June Brown) is a devoutly religious launderette owner, with more Bible quotations to hand than a vicar and unconditional love for her wayward son Nick Cotton (John Altman), despite the fact he's tried to kill her.
But it seems as if Dot - who recently became a great-grandmother for the first time - is finally going to snap.
And it's going to have deadly consequences for Nasty Nick.
That's right; Dot will reportedly be accused of her son's murder and, after being arrested, will confess her crimes to the police.
However sources have revealed that, while Dot may have confessed to the crime, it doesn't necessarily mean she's the killer - and there will be plenty of twists and turns along the way.
A source revealed to The Mirror: “Having Dot accused of murdering Nick will be a real shocker for fans.
“Everyone has been waiting for Lucy Beale’s killer to be revealed as part of the anniversary week – which will happen.
“But in this amazing twist, the soap will immediately be plunged into another big murder mystery."
They continued: “The prospect of widowed pensioner Dot facing trial and being put behind bars for killing her own son is a huge storyline.
“Producers have been plotting this storyline for over a year – ever since John Altman returned.
“EastEnders has enjoyed a massive resurgence in recent months, and producers are convinced this murder plot involving Dot will help them keep ahead in the ratings’ battle with Coronation Street.”
The scenes will air during the week of live episodes celebrating the 30th anniversary of the BBC show next month.
