The scenes in question showed Ben Mitchell (Harry Reid) and Paul Coker (Jonny Labey) stripping off in a funeral parlour.
As the couple began kissing passionately, there were many tongue in cheek jokes about the dead body lying nearby in an open casket.
Many viewers quickly took to Twitter to voice their disapproval, insisting that the scenes had left them feeling ill.
It seems as if complaints were focused on the location of the sex scenes, as opposed to the sexualities of the characters involved.
An Ofcom spokesperson has confirmed that they have received almost fifty official complaints over the scenes.
They said: “Ofcom has received 48 complaints about EastEnders on Friday 17th.
“We will assess these complaints before deciding whether to investigate or not."
However the soap’s bosses have rushed to defend the scenes, with a BBC spokesperson telling the Daily Star: “The millions of regular EastEnders fans who tune in each week know and expect dramatic storylines.
“We are always mindful of our time slot in which we are shown and the scenes in question were implied and not explicit.”
It is not the first time that a storyline between Ben Mitchell and Paul Coker has sparked headlines.
After the duo shared their first kiss last month, homophobic trolls launched a tirade of disgusting abuse on Twitter, forcing one of the actors to speak out.
Harry Reid, who plays Ben, took to Instagram to challenge the bigots, posting a picture of Ronnie Kray - who, previous reports suggest, was bisexual - alongside the caption: “It's upsetting to read the negative tweets about the gay kiss in last night's episode of @bbceastenders.
"I only want to ask one question. Would you of called Ronnie Kray disgusting? #whatwouldronniesay [sic].
"Note: I'm not biting, it just needed pointing out ;)”
