Rita Simons will soon leave EastEnders after nine years on the BBC soap playing Roxy Mitchell.

The news comes just days after it was announced that Samantha Womack – who plays Rita’s on screen sister Ronnie Mitchell – will be departing Albert Square too.

A spokesperson for the soap said: "Having joined the show in 2007, Rita immediately won the hearts of the audience in the role of Roxy Mitchell and between her and Samantha Womack they created one of the most iconic duos EastEnders has ever seen.

"Alongside Samantha, Rita was recently offered to take part in the same big storyline that will see the Mitchell sisters depart Walford, but we will not be releasing any further details at this time. We wish Rita all the best for the future."

Rita took to Twitter to confirm the news and thank her fans for their support.

She tweeted: “Thanku guys 4 all the continued love & support u have shown me (and Roxy) over the years. I'm so grateful for my time on EE. Love to u all.”

It's not known exactly how Roxy – or her sister Ronnie – will be exiting Walford, but Rita did tweet with a possible hint that the Mitchell sisters will head off together.

She said: “As the saying goes 'Mitchell sisters..together forever' @Sam_Womack Haaaaa you're stuck with me sis!”

But will their exit be a happy one?

The 39-year-old has been given many major storylines during her time on the show including the recent attempted rape storyline.

EastEnders continues tonight at 7:30pm on BBC One.
