The 27-year-old hinted that, while viewers know Dean did attack Linda [Kellie Bright], he could manage to convince people otherwise.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Matt said: "We all know Dean did do it but my character is now trying to prove his innocence and I think you will see over the next few episodes he does, if not prove his innocence, disprove his guilt."

Matt said the controversial storyline is about sending the message that victims need to report rape straight away, to improve the chance of conviction.

Matt insisted the the controversial storyline is about improving conviction rates

He continued: "It is not about awards, actors or ratings, it is about if you are raped then the sad dark truth is the sooner you report it the better your chances of getting justice and that person being convicted.

"Dean getting off is unfortunately completely realistic. You just have to look at the statistics – 80 per cent of rape isn't reported. Of the 20 per cent that is reported only about 10 per of those leads to a conviction.

"So out of a hundred cases of men accused of raping women only two will lead to conviction. What we are trying to show is the sooner you report it, the more chances there are of that scumbag going to prison."

While Matt's one-year contract is almost up, he is confident it will be extended.

He added: "I'm having a great time. I wake up every morning with a smile on my face, doing a job I want to be doing. I'm incredibly happy."
