Colin Russell joined the BBC show in 1986 before leaving three years later in 1989. Viewers haven't seen Colin on-screen since then but he's returning in September.

The last time we saw Colin in Walford he was dating Barry Clark (played by Gary Hailes). Colin was the first ever gay character on EastEnders and his relationship with Barry Clark caused a lot of controversy.

They were the first gay couple to share an on-screen kiss in a British soap.

Lord Michael Cashman – who plays Colin – spoke about his return: "It was a real joy, indeed a privilege, to return to my old home of Albert Square.

"To be amongst so many friends again, and to be back in the place where 30 years ago I started an amazing journey.

"An amazing journey which incredibly helped to change the country, and certainly its attitude to lesbian, gay and bisexual people."

Lord Cashmanm who is now appointed to the House of Lords, confessed: "Arguably without EastEnders I would have never gone into politics; I would not have been one of the founders of Stonewall and its founding chair, and I would never have ended up where I am now.

"As Shakespeare would have said by returning to where it all started 'the wheel has turned full circle'.

"And the exquisite joy of having my scenes with the incredible 'Dame' June Brown was a bonus beyond anything else."

June Brown's characters – Dot Cotton – didn't have the best reaction when she found out Colin was gay, however she ended up becoming close friends with him.

Colin will return to the show for two episodes next month and his reunion with Dot will raise a big question for Mrs Cotton.

We can't wait!
