Max Branning’s great escape might have been based on a true story (yes, really!), but it had EastEnders fans in stitches…

It’s official; Max Branning has gone on the run.

EastEnders fans watched as Jake Wood’s character managed to do a runner from court after being found guilty of killing Lucy Beale - punching DS Bryant along the way for good measure.

And, judging by their Twitter responses, they were a tad surprised…

However, when one cheeky viewer asked if the EastEnders writers had been drunk while writing Max’s bid for freedom, story producer Alex Lamb set the record straight.

It was based on a TRUE STORY!

So there we go, guys; stick THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

After the episode had aired, the story producer also tweeted his excitement at the week ahead in EastEnders, describing it as "unmissable" television.

And he let slip that Max Branning won’t be the only one leaving Walford.

Yup, that’s right. Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), Robbie Jackson (Dean Gaffney) and Carol (Lindsey Coulson) are all s”et to go out with a bang”, too.

But will any of them match Jake Wood’s spectacular stint as Jason Bourne?

We doubt it. We very much doubt it.
