While many people have slammed Shabnam Masood as a difficult character to like, there’s no denying that she’s a force to be reckoned with in Albert Square.

In a recent episode of EastEnders, viewers watched as Tamwar FINALLY embarked upon a romantic relationship with Nancy Carter.

Something which, of course, many fans had been waiting for ever since the cute duo had first clapped eyes on each other.

However, while the rest of us were busy turning somersaults over Nanwar, Shabnam wasn’t happy.

At all.

Viewers watched as Shabnam fought to stop her family supporting brother’s newfound love - and she soon brought up father Masood’s past romantic disasters with Carol and Jane.

She went on to heavily imply that the reason these two trysts hadn’t worked out was because neither of the women involved was a Muslim.

Shabnam then added that ‘white women’ treat men a certain way - and viewers were quick to respond angrily on Twitter.

However some viewers were quick to challenge these opinions, insisting that the soap is intended to mirror real life - and that there are some people out there who hold these opinions.

Others pointed out that the show has covered many different angles of racism in the past, and that it was only fair that they hold up a mirror to all opinions held in society, in a bid to challenge them directly.

It’s not the first time Shabnam’s comments have angered viewers; in 2014, she told Masood firmly that it was not right for him to be with a white woman - referring to Carol Jackson.

Responding to complaints, show bosses said at the time: “EastEnders has a rich history of tackling social issues.

“The show does not advocate racism or intolerance in any way; in fact it seeks to challenge these negative views.”
