All weekend, like Pam Coker, we were trying to work out who funeral director Les could be having an affair with.
For two whole days we’ve been wracking our brains, trying to put a face to the name ‘Christine’ – but last night the truth came out.
When Donna Yates discovered Les Coker in his underwear at her mother’s house, we all assumed he and Claudette Hubbard were having an affair.
But, as his world started to come crashing down around him, Les made the confession that ‘Christine’ is actually him: he’s a cross dresser.
He told a devastated Pam: “You know how stressed I get. I’m surrounded by grief all day. It gets to me. Sometimes I need not to be a man.”
Pam tearfully asked how long it had been going on, and Les replied: “Since I was seven.”
Far from being understanding, Pam recoiled and told her husband he made her feel sick.
He fumed: “You should have told me years ago, before we got married. I don’t know who you are anymore. You disgust me.”
Viewers took to Twitter to express their shock, with opinions divided.
One user wrote: “Loving the real in Les and Pam’s storyline in #EastEnders. I hope she forgives and understands his point of view soon [sic].”
Many were quick to compare Les’ situation to that of reality star Caitlyn Jenner and, while some slammed the BBC One soap for the reveal, others defended the storyline.
“Les’ cross dressing storyline in EastEnders is really important and the comments I’m reading from folk are so sickening [sic],” another wrote.
