In their new series Eamonn & Ruth: How The Other Half Lives, Eamonn Holmes, 57, and his missus, Ruth Langsford, are delving into the world of the super-wealthy. Closer Magazine had a chat with Eamonn to get the low-down...
Last week's episode of Eamonn & Ruth: How The Other Half Lives saw the presenters living it up in Dubai. This week, they're a little closer to home, seeing how the landed gentry splash their cash. Here's what Eamonn had to say of the experience...
You look like you’re having lots of fun doing this series...
Logistically it can be difficult to fit it in, but I’ve been doing live TV for 37 years and it’s quite nice to do something that’s more creative. Ruth and I would never come away from anybody’s wealth and say: “We wish that was us.” We’re very happy with our lot and it’s lovely to observe – and then come back into your own house, and close your own door.
It’s all very like “Lionel Richie’s Hello” when you model for your own traditional clay bust...
It’s a wonderful thing! There are people who may think I’ve got a big head and, when you see this, you will realise I really do; it’s massive! Ruth thinks it’s somewhat over-indulgent... surely such a magnificent article will get pride of place at home? Well, Ruth is not very ostentatious, whereas I could be the King of Bling! All these people we interview for this series, you go into their homes and they have massive portraits of themselves or their own busts. So I thought, why not?
You both went to a Debutante Ball, what was that like?
It’s where a lot of teenagers are presented to well-to-do boyfriends. These families with money don’t want little Alice running off with somebody working in the supermarket! Money meets money...
What did you wear?
It was white tie and you wear a black jacket with tails on it, like a butler. Ruth wore one of her hundred dresses that she has hanging up in the wardrobe but are never worn...
Another highlight was clay pigeon shooting, using hand- engraved shotguns...
If you earn good money you get better shoes, better cufflinks, better ties, better handbags – whatever. For rich people, they take part in certain pursuits and they equip themselves with more luxurious things. If you’ve got money – and we’re talking mega- money, not just being well-off – you have to find increasingly ludicrous things to spend it on. How did your new well-to-do friends take to you two? Ruth’s from Army barracks and I’m from a council house; they can smell that at 100 paces! It doesn’t go down well...
