Fans praised her performance earlier this month and now it looks as if Denise Welch is keen to reprise her successful EastEnders role.

The actress played Kyle’s mum Alison Slater, who found it difficult to accept the fact that he is transgender.

Denise says she would be happy to return to the BBC soap but admitted to Daily Star Online: “They haven’t asked me and it will depend on what I’m doing.

“If there’s a cracking storyline then of course I’ll be embracing it whole heartedly.”

She added: “I just want to say that I did one guest episode of EastEnders. Everyone seems to think I’m signed up for life and I’m absolutely not but it’s a very important story.”

Speaking at the British LGBT Awards the 57-year-old talked about how she feels shows like EastEnders and Boy Meets Girl - which she also starred in - are helping the trans community.

She said: “I feel very honoured to be repenting the trans community in that way. I think 2015 and 16 has seen huge advances and acceptance of that particular community.

“The fact that I’ve been the go to transgender mum in two things makes me feel like I’ve got a proper foot firmly in the door at these awards.”

Boy Meets Girl was among the winners at last night’s award ceremony, taking home the gong for Media Moment of the year.
