Is it ever a good idea to have sex on TV? Former Love Island contestants Kady McDermott and Zara Holland debate the issue...

Love Island is undoubtedly the TV hit of the summer, and has gripped the nation with its irresistable combination of hot boddies, romantic drama, AND on-screen sex.

Last year’s outrageous series was dogged with complaints and controversy as contestants were regularly shown having sex in the communal bedroom - with one couple even having sex ON TOP of the covers in full display of the cameras.

And although this year's show has been less controversial, two couples have got down and dirty in front of the cameras so far.

Jessica Shears and Dom Lever became the first pair to romp in the villa, despite Jess having sworn off sex just days earlier, saying “my knickers will remain firmly on.” They were swiftly followed by Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies who had sex the same night.

It’s in stark contrast to the first time sex shown on British TV in 2005, when Big Brother contestants Michelle Bass and Stuart Wilson shocked viewers by hiding in a makeshift tent to have sex.

So has sex on TV become acceptable? We asked two of last year’s Love Island stars who had sex on the show...

Kady McDermott: ‘I fell in love on TV - having sex was the natural step’

Kady McDermott, 21, had sex regularly throughout last year’s series with boyfriend Scott Thomas, who she’s still in a relationship with.

She says: “Before I went on Love Island I said to myself there was no way in hell I’d have sex on TV. I was adamant. But being in the house, six weeks felt like six years and I fell in love. We were really serious about each other and I felt like I was in a secure relationship that naturally progressed, it was just an organic thing that happened.

"I’d never have a one night stand or just have sex for the shock factor - I’m sure some girls would go on Love Island to do that, but for me and the couples who fell in love, sex on the show it was totally natural rather than anything shocking or crude.

"Love Island certainly doesn’t intentionally put girls in a bad light showing them have sex on TV – when you like someone sometimes you can’t help go with the flow. We’re all a little crazy when it comes to love! But I don’t think girls are portrayed any worse than boys.”

Zara Holland: ‘It was the biggest regret of my life'

Zara Holland, 21, caused shockwaves when she had sex with Alex Bowen last year after knowing him for less than 24 hours, and was subsequently stripped of her Miss Great Britain title for failing to be “a positive role model”.

She previously told Closer: “I was in the moment, I was in the hideaway and I’d had a few glasses of champagne, but I’m not blaming it on that. I made the biggest mistake of my life. My mum told me not to sleep with anyone so I let my mum down, which really upset me. But I didn’t commit a crime or do anything to hurt anyone. I wouldn’t have done it if I had my time again though.”

Speaking last year soon after the event she said: "Earlier on that day we had a challenge and it was mates rates and the new boys got to rate everyone in order of which was the hottest girl and how much banter there was in the group and I was the fourth fittest girl and I didn't apparently have much banter. And I started to think 'Oh no, am I not that fun or am I not that pretty?' It's sort of everything that day contributed to it. I'm not making an excuse, I know I'm my own person and I made that decision, but literally it was in the moment and it was the biggest mistake ever."
