Channel 4 has axed money quiz show Deal Or No Deal after 11 years of contestants trying the ‘beat the Banker’.

Every episode features a single contestant who opens 22 identical boxes over a number of rounds. Each box contains a sum of money ranging from 1p to £250,000.

The Banker offers ‘real’ cash in lieu of the box; contestants can take the deal or play on to win whatever’s inside.

Only eight contestants have ever won the £250,000 top prize, along with surprise holidays.

The unseen banker (also known as Deal) has coordinated the game with host Noel Edmonds since the very beginning.

There’s been much speculation about the banker’s identity over the years. Some sources have claimed he’s former Coronation Street actor and host of The Mole, Glenn Hugill, who works as part of the show's production team.

But Edmonds denied this rumour when speaking to Heat magazine back in July 2006.

In the 10th anniversary special, Noel Edmonds played the game and won £26,000 for Children's Hospice South West.

And in September last year, Edmonds hinted that the show might be running out of steam.

He said: "I have no idea about the future of Deal or No Deal.

"I get asked this all the time and what I can say is we finished recording the last one at the end of the first week of May and they have enough Deal or No Deal to go through to the end of next year.

"I do not know if it will be recorded again, if it's over I have had a sensational 10 years."

Show bosses want the award-winning quiz to go out on a high and have planned a ‘Farewell Tour’ where a dozen new episodes will be filmed at different locations around the country.

An insider said: "Deal Or No Deal doesn’t get the ratings it used to and it is not a cheap daytime show to make. Noel and ‘Deal’ had a great run but bosses have just decided it is the right time to end the series.

"The farewell tour will be a great way for fans to say goodbye to the show."

Channel 4 aren’t ready to let go of Edmonds who received a BAFTA nomination for his work on the show but lost out to Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.

So this won't be the last we see of Noel, as Channel 4 are making a new daytime TV show for the presenting stalwart where contestants must guess the value of items such as signed premier league football shirts.
