Coronation Street’s Eileen Derbyshire is set to leave the soap, having played Emily Bishop since 1961.

The 84-year-old will reportedly be taking a six month break, but rumours are rife that the actress may not return.

A source told The Sun: “Eileen asked for a few months off from filming and she is due to leave early in the New Year.

“She is obviously a big loss to the show, even if it is really is temporary, because she’s one of the most recognisable characters on the cobbles.

“And so many other popular cast members are heading for the door.”

Brooke Vincent is taking two months from the show, as is Alison King who is taking 12 months off.

David Neilson will also be taking a break in 2016.

Looks like it's time for some new blood on the cobbles (not literally we hope).
