As a general rule of thumb, soap characters have a far shorter life expectancy than those of us out here in the real world.

Which is all due to the fact that there are just so many more many plane crashes, gas explosions, and serial killers prowling the likes of Weatherfield and Albert Square.

So it should come as no surprise to hear that Corrie bosses are reportedly planning to kill off yet another character…

… with one difference.

Yup, this time around, our Coronation Street fave will be bumped off while he’s OFF-SCREEN.

Nowhere’s safe anymore, is it?

According to The Sun, roguish builder Tony Stewart will be written out for good in an upcoming episode.

However his death will not be shown, which means that we won’t be given a last peek at actor Terence Maynard in the role.

The electrician left with his tail well and truly between his legs in November last year, after Liz (Beverley Callard) caught him out having an affair with Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford).

Tony was forced to sell his share of the Rovers back to Steve (Simon Gregson), so it was unsurprising he fancied a change of scenery.

He quickly sought out his son, Jason (Ryan Thomas), and told him that he was headed for sunny Birmingham, to start a new life for himself.

But it seems as if things haven’t worked out quite as Tony had hoped...

In scenes set to be broadcast next month, Corrie viewers will see the police breaking the news to Jason that he's father has died.

It remains to be seen what effect this will have on both his ex-lover and son.

However we DO know that Ryan Thomas has quit his role as Jason Grimshaw, so it seems as if his father’s death could trigger a need to get away from Weatherfield.

Or could it set him on a dark spiral from which he cannot ever return?
