Kate told The Sun in a statement: "I’ll be forever grateful for this opportunity and all it has given me, but I’m also excited to try something new."
But an insider revealed to the publication that her daring storylines had caused division within the cast and crew, saying it was "always a matter of when, not if," that Kate would leave.
They said: "There’s a feeling of jumping before she was pushed. But she is staying within the ITV family.
"The storylines she worked on, while rating successes, were very divisive among viewers and the cast and crew. Everyone is looking forward to seeing what the future on the soap looks like now."
ITV released a statement to MailOnline which confirmed that Emmerdale's Iain MacLeod would be taking over Corrie as Kate was moving into drama series.
She already has her first role in her new role, having been made Producer on the second series of Bancroft starring Sarah Parish.
This won't come as a surprise to many, as Kate's has introduced many hard-hitting storylines during her tenure.
Pat Phelan's murderous spree along with Bethany Platt's paedophile sex ring - and not forgetting David Platt's recent male rape storyline - have been a bit too much for some Coronation Street viewers.
However, they've done more good than harm, raising awareness for difficult real-life topics and charities have seen huge increases in victims reaching out for help.
Kate hinted at an exit last month, telling Metro: "I am only ever keeping the seat warm, as is every producer.
"I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved – from tackling some seriously important storylines to opening up a brand new set and making a smooth transition to six episodes."
