Bad news Weatherfield residents - Coronation Street was the most complained about soap in 2016!
Coronation Street isn't thought of as one of the racier soaps, but it beat off stiff competition from the likes of EastEnders and Hollyoaks to win the (unofficial) title of Most Controversial Soap of 2016!
How? Well it turns out that Coronation Street received the most Ofcom complaints of any UK soap last year.
Yes, the residents of Weatherfield managed to amass a whopping 1204 Ofcom complaints in 2016.
But why did Corrie receive so many complaints? Well, it's mostly down to the ever-ignorant Eva Price.
Regular viewers may remember the controversy when Eva went to the hair salon and declared, "I've got more roots than Kunta Kinte!"
However, despite this one line receiving 473 Ofcom complaints (not to mention a lot of disgust on Twitter), Ofcom gave the Corrie script writers a pass, saying: "For her to speak in this thoughtless fashion without understanding what she was referring to, or that it might cause offence, was likely to have been consistent with the audience’s expectations of her character.
But where did our other favourite soaps place in the complaints ranking?
Well interestingly, Emmerdale took second place with 789 complaints, EastEnders was third with 335, while amazingly, Hollyoaks received just 26 Ofcom complaints!
But is Hollyoaks really the least controversial soap on telly? Our theories that actually, Hollyoaks fans are the least easily offended and far more likely to voice their rage on Twitter than place an official complaint with Ofcom.
