Jack P Shepherd has walked the cobbles in Weatherfield for the past 16 years as Coronation Street’s David Platt.

And, while he’s loved every single minute of it, the talented young actor has recently felt the need to try something new.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Jack explained that he has taken on the lead role in a short film called Taubman, written and directed by his Corrie co-star Ben Price (aka Nick Tilsley).

In the movie, which is set in a not-so-distant future, Jack plays a government worker who loves to play by the rules - and who has become a little too eager to tell people what to do.

Jack’s character is so much in love with his authority that, when a Jewish piano tuner comes in to his office seeking a passport, he refuses to give him one.

However it isn’t long before the tables are turned on Jack’s bureaucrat - and he’s left absolutely devastated.

The film required that Jack use all of his emotional range - and the finished product definitely made a big impression on him.

He said simply: “When I got to see the finished film, I was a bit speechless at how good it was.”

So has taking on a new role away from the ITV soap encouraged Jack to quit, like his co-stars Paula Lane, Alison King and Ryan Thomas?

The 28-year-old kept his answer refreshingly honest, explaining: “Obviously, if something came about and it was too good an offer to turn down, then of course I would want to do it.

“And there are a lot of people who are going off to do something else while not leaving the show. They’re coming back. So, that’s an idea.”

The dad-of-three finished: “I have loved being at Corrie, but doing this film with Ben has opened my eyes.

“It’s been entered into film festivals, so if it does well, we could be at the Oscars.”

He wouldn’t be the first to swap soaps for Hollywood; Ben Hardy - who played Peter Beale in EastEnders - is set to sat in X-Men Apocalypse.

Ben is appearing as Angel in the film which is due for general release on May 19, 2016 - a role which he described as “a huge relief” to have landed.

Comparing LA to Walford, he told The Mirror: "LA is big, although Hollywood's not as glamorous as I thought, it's kind of grungy.

"It's not too much of a leap from 'EastEnders' in that sense!”

Do you think Jack P Shepherd has a chance to make it big in the movies? Or would you miss him too much in Corrie?
