Gail Platt in Corrie

She’s been treading the cobbles for 42 years, but Corrie’s Helen Worth - aka Gail Platt - has admitted she fears for her position on the soap.

Previous reports have claimed that the soap’s new producer, Kate Oates, is set to shake things up and axe characters when she takes over from departing boss Stuart Blackburn.

And it seems as if the reports have put 65-year-old Helen on edge.

Talking to the Daily Star Sunday, the veteran soap star said: "You do get nervous. It's new beginnings. You're in their hands.

"You just keep your fingers crossed and hope they want the character to continue.”

However Helen added that she hopes her role as an older woman on the show may cement her status as a long-running character.

She said: “In real life there are older people. So they have to be represented on the show.

"In fact they are a very important part of our programme. So I've no idea how long I'll be on the show.

“Let's just see.”

However, while many older characters have been left quaking in their boots over the prospect of a new producer, it seems as if Kate Oates is planning to bring BACK a lot of older characters, as opposed to bump them off.

Speaking to the Daily Star, she explained: “I think ‘Corrie’ has a strong cast and also a strong history…

“I’m looking forward to seeing what the writers are interested in doing and matching their ideas with mine.

“Often you find yourselves thinking from the same place. You think along similar lines. And I’m sure that’s true when it comes to bringing back popular characters.”

This is VERY good news for longstanding Corrie fans, as it means that former Weatherfield residents could be set to return to the cobbles.

Does this mean that Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear), Curly Watts (Kevin Kennedy), Reg Holdsworth (Ken Morley), Rosie Webster (Helen Flanagan), Keith Duffy (Ciaran McCarthy), Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor), Les Battersby (Bruce Jones) and Mavis Wilton (Thelma Barlow) could all make a comeback soon?

We really hope so!
