There's going to be a new girl on the block, as Chelsee Healey has joined the Hollyoaks cast.

Chelsee will be portraying Goldie, a long lost relative of the McQueen family, as she arrives on Tuesday next week to search for her 'posh' relatives Myra, Mercedes and John Paul.

The actress is best known for her role as Janeece Bryant in the BBC school drama series Waterloo Road from 2006-2009 and then again from 2010-2012.

Some of you may remember Chelsee strutting her stuff on the Strictly Come Dancing dance floor in 2011 where she finished runner up with partner Pasha Kovale - but this will be her first TV role since her casting as Honey Wright on Casualty came to a close last year.

Closer's TV Editor Hannah Wright caught up with Chelsee to talk all things Hollyoaks, Bear Grylls and Strictly...

Goldie McQueen doesn't exactly look like the shy and retiring type!

(Laughs) Where do I start?! I mean, you definitely wouldn't miss her! She's very out there, she loves the whole animal print thing – and the purple lips which just set the look off. There's the bright red hair as well. It's a wig – you can see my dark hair at the front but the rest is this bright red mane...

You do attract these characters! School secretary Janeece in Waterloo Road and tea lady Honey in Casualty were quite "out there" as well.

I know! These casting directors need to give me a break! I never get the part of a normal, nice, plain girl - I must suit being tacky! (Laughs). But Goldie is a really fun character to play. When I get the hair, make-up and clothes on it gets me even more into character. And it's fun I can play about with her as well.

The McQueens are a legendary Hollyoaks family; how does it feel to be joining them?

When I found out I'd got a part in Hollyoaks I was absolutely made up, but then to be told I was going into the McQueen family was just was amazing. I was so happy.

You've guest-starred in Hollyoaks before, as Danny Valentine's ex-girlfriend. Did that make you less nervous of being the new girl?

It really didn't, because that was a good long time ago. Honestly, it was a joke how anxious I was; it was like being the new girl at school. The nerves didn't settle at all!

Has everyone made you feel welcome?

Everyone has been so lovely and welcoming which has helped a lot. I've been there two months now and I've done a lot of filming with Jennifer Metcalfe (who plays Mercedes) and Nadine (Mulkerrin, who plays Cleo). I can definitely see us all becoming friends, and we're all a similar age.

Have you had any nights out yet?

No! Not just yet. I've been really busy and I think I want to settle in and get all the work done before I think about the socialising. And these early starts are killing me as well! I'm Manchester-based so I have to travel (to Liverpool, where the Hollyoaks set is). I'm up at 5am – it's a long day but I'm quite happy to jump in the car in my tracksuit. Shower, hair shoved up and I'm good to go.

Would you like to make this a permanent thing?

I'm having so much fun at the minute I don't want it to end. I have got a year's contract so there's definitely more time for me to spend at Hollyoaks, which is amazing. I love the long-haul jobs and I'm lucky in that the jobs I've done feel like working with a big family.

Then Bear Grylls: Mission Survive came along... (Chelsee was the first out of the hardcore survival show earlier this year and admitted she "struggled")

Oh my gosh, yes, please don't mention that! (Laughs) I love a challenge and I'd never say never again but I think I didn't realise what I was letting myself in for when I said yes to that job. I wasn't ready whatsoever! At least I turned up on the day though.

You finished runner-up on Strictly Come Dancing in 2011; do you still tune in?

I do whenever I'm in on the Saturday and I think this year is amazing - I'm really loving it. But to be honest I still find it quite sad to tune in because it was such an amazing job for me. I really do still miss it.

Finally, shocking red hair aside – you're in great shape. Do you do anything special to look your best for the cameras?

When I was younger I used to eat what I wanted when I wanted. But I'm 28 now and I'm finding I put weight on much easier and it's bloody hard to lose it! I think I eat quite healthily - I like my fruit and my salads, and I tend not to eat a lot of carbs so that keeps me quite trim. But I definitely think I need to get back seeing my personal trainer...

Will she be a troublemaker or a peacekeeper?

We can't wait to find out!
