There’s no point denying it; Chummy has been one of the best things about BBC One’s Call The Midwife ever since it debut in 2012.

Which is why we were devastated when Miranda Hart revealed that she was ‘too busy’ to return for the fifth series of the drama.

The 42-year-old comedian confirmed to the Daily Mirror: “I am very sad not to have been able to be involved in series five but, on the plus side, maybe Chummy can come back in the next series an enlightened, crazed 60s hippy, having an affair with Paul McCartney.”

A spokesperson for the show added: “Unfortunately scheduling clashes have made it impossible for Miranda to appear in this series of Call the Midwife.

“But Chummy is alive and well and she will always be warmly welcomed back to Nonnatus House.”

Thank goodness for that, eh?

Her character was, as a result, moved to a mother and baby unit AWAY from Poplar… and we were all given tiny titbits as to how she was getting on from her loyal hubby, PC Noakes.

But it just wasn’t the same.

So we all lived in hope - and now, finally, our prayers have been answered.

Yup, Chummy will be BACK for the Christmas Special - and she’ll be starring throughout series 6 when it returns in 2017.

Neal Street Productions confirmed the comedian's return to The Sun, saying: "We've been bursting to share the news Chummy has left the mother and baby unit and is heading back to Poplar for series six!

"We're thrilled to be once again featuring Miranda Hart and her fabulous blend of warmth, strength and vulnerability as Chummy gets to grips with the medical and social challenges of the 1960s."

Jolly good, as Chummy herself might say.
