Actress Bhavna Limbachia has revealed it was her decision to have her character Rana Habeeb killed off

Rana has been a major character on Coronation Street for the past three years, and had been preparing to marry her girlfriend Kate Connor.

But in a shocking twist, Rana was killed in the dramatic factory collapse which saw Carla Connor named suspect number one and Gina Sneddon leave the cobbles for good.

Having announced her impending departure earlier this year, Bhavna has now said that dying in Kate’s arms was the only fitting end for Rana.

“When I told Kate Oates and Iain McLeod that I wanted to leave the show to try other things, it was my decision and my choice for Rana to die because it was the only fitting end to the character,” she said, after the emotional scenes aired last night.

"Kate and Rana had fought so hard to be together and they had been through thick and thin together.

“I believe their love was so pure as two souls that there was no way that Rana was just going to have a change of heart, hop in a cab and leave.

"I felt that if they were to be separated, they had to be torn apart and it couldn’t have been their decision. The only way to go was if Rana were to die. Rana would never leave Kate, ever."

As Weatherfield reels from the tragedy, some viewers have expressed distaste that another LGBT character in soapland has been killed off.

One commenter said, “Lesbian relationships in @itvcorrie either end in domestic violence or death. This is the first time in recent years that there has been an interracial lesbian couple in a soap where the WOC isn't an abuser, so she gets killed on her wedding day. Do better. #CoronationStreet”.

“Isn't there a trope that as soon as a gay character reaches a milestone, you have to kill them off?” asked another, whilst a third pointed out, “Why can’t lesbians just be happy in Corrie???"
